Red River:
Red River Ski Area has restructured its toll free number, 800-331-SNOW. As you may or may not know, Red River Central has helped supply lodging packages for Red River over the past several years. The owners of RRC have taken a new direction with their local business with the acquisition of Frye’s Old Town. Red River Ski Area has taken control of the toll free number and since we cannot book accommodations we will now use the toll free number for reservations and referral to local lodging. We appreciate your patience as we work on new ways to provide information to you more efficiently.

Ski Apache:

Durango Mountain Resort (Purgatory):
The biggest task for the new year has been upgrading the snowmaking system. They have added new, energy efficient machines to our fleet, and upgraded the current machines to be more energy efficient which will help us increase our uphill snowmaking capacity by 50 percent. This will allow DMR to cover more terrain more quickly during the early season and for the first time ever snowmaking on the backside of the mountain! That means they will be able to get terrain on this popular part of the mountain open earlier. Also new this season, an upgraded rental fleet. More than 200 new skis and snowboards have been added to the rental shops, offering some of the best equipment in the area. They specifically upgraded our children's line of ski and snowboard rentals, making it even easier for the little ones to learn on the slopes. Also new this winter, they are completely revamping the Cafe above Dante's, the premier spot to eat on The Backside. We're still tinkering with the menu, the new name and the layout of the restaurant, but we're sure you'll be as excited as we are come opening day. Finally, the construction of the new Purgatory Lodge continues. The new Purgatory Lodge will total about 130K square feet and will include residential units, club facilities, a day lodge, a fitness center, a new Purgy's restaurant, lockers, retail shops, a family pool area and a ticket office. This new lodge should be complete in 2009.
Wolf Creek:
For the 2007 - 2008 ski season, Wolf Creek will finish up a number of projects that were started last summer including: the Summit patrol building on top of Treasure lift and water free restrooms at the top of the Raven and Treasure lifts. Base area maintenance, trail work, reseeding, removal of spruce beetle infested trees are a partial list of the on going work on the mountain. One hundred percent of Wolf Creek’s electricity is offset with wind power for winter and summer operations. Wolf Creek will continue to run the Divide Shuttle, which provides the return service for skiers exploring the western boundary of Wolf Creek’s Special Use Permit. A schedule is posted in the ticket office for customer information. Wolf Creek’s fleet of buses will continue to provide free shuttle service to and from the complimentary parking. Also, over holiday period Wolf Creek runs extended operating hours for all guests to have an optional early morning or late run on the mountain. Wolf Creek’s Rental Department has again upgraded all its ski and snowboard rentals with high-end equipment that rents at extremely affordable prices. Noel Sports, located below the Pathfinder bar, is Wolf Creek’s newest snowboard retail shop, providing the latest in Burton and Never Summer boards, bindings and boots as well as other accessories.
Silverton Mountain:
Eight years after Silverton Mountain owners Aaron and Jen Brill applied for a federal permit to operate their ski area, their patience was recently rewarded with approval by the Bureau of Land Management. This new permit could lead to earlier openings and more unguided skiing. Silverton Mountain, has operated on renewable annual permits since 2001. The new permit allows for year-round use of the area, which means they can now go into July if they have the snow. Silverton Mountain spans 1,819 acres, of which 1,300 are owned by the BLM. The permit applies to the BLM land. The chairlift and base area are on private property. The permit does not allow new chairlifts or other improvements on BLM land. It permits as many as 450 skiers a day. The operating schedule for the new season is as follows: December 1 - January 13, 2008 Unguided skiing (guides available for those who want guided skiing at that time, guides can take you beyond the unguided boundaries). Planned dates of operation for December are 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30 (dates subject to change at any time). Open Thurs-Sun starting January 3rd. January 17th - March 30, 2008. Open Thurs-Sun Guided Only Skiing with approx 80 skiers a day or less. Reservations for guided skiing available now. April 4- April 27, 2008 Unguided skiing returns (guides still available for those who want guided skiing at that time, guides can take you beyond the unguided boundaries). Planned dates of operation for April are 4, 5, 6, 12, 13, 19, 20, 26, 27. Schedule for April is subject to change.
Telluride Resort:
New this season is the opening of Black Iron Bowl, adding eight runs of backcountry-style terrain adjacent to Prospect Bowl. The area sits against the dramatic backdrop of Palmyra Peak on the western end of the resort. Black Iron Bowl is accessible via Lift 12 (Prospect Lift) and a short hike out Prospect Ridge. Skiers and riders will be able to drop in anywhere from 10 minutes to 30 minutes hiking time along the ridge. Dropping 1000 vertical feet on the primary pitches, terrain includes the expansive Mountain Quail couloir, European-style faces, open glades and steep chutes. The Mountain Quail couloir had previously been accessible as guide-only, but now the full expanse of Black Iron will be open for public access as conditions allow. Other new runs include Westlake, Lakeview, Review, Dihedral Chute, Dihedral Face, Jello’s Bowl and Nice Chute. Black Iron Bowl, named for an old mining claim, is an excellent addition to the existing inbounds hike-to areas of Bald Mountain and Prospect Ridge, where advanced skiers and boarders enjoy fresh tracks virtually all season. Conditions permitting, Black Iron Bowl will open as early as January. On the heels of Telluride’s opening of Black Iron Bowl to pubic access, the resort has gained approval for skiing and riding Palmyra Peak this winter. Located east of Black Iron Bowl and Prospect Bowl, this unbelievable hike-to terrain includes well over 200 acres and almost 2,000 vertical feet on the north face of 13,320 foot Palmyra Peak. What can be considered some of the most spectacular in-bounds terrain in the country, the runs Tram Shot, Sunrise and Electric Shock drain into Upper Moraine, and Lower Palmyra Ridge which lead into Black Iron Bowl. This opening has been made possible due to the addition of a new avalauncher this fall to the top of Gold Hill #5.
